Setting goals at the beginning of the new year is not normally something I do. However, since I am going travelling at the start of 2019 I decided to set some goals. I’m hoping that setting a few travel goals for the year ahead will help me to step out of my comfort zone and encourage me to do as much as I can. There’s so much of this world to see and it’s time for my adventures to start.
2018 was not a big travel year for me, yet I still did quite a bit. I visited 2 new countries, travelled solo for the first time, moved to London for a month and graduated from university. I am ready for 2019 to be my biggest travel year ever and soon I’m leaving England with my one way plane ticket to New Zealand (with a few stops along the way).
1) Travel to 5 new countries
Okay, so this is actually part of a more long-term goal to visit 25 countries by the time I’m 25. So far I have visited 14 countries in total. That gives me two and a half years to visit 11 more, which means I need to start now.
I already have flights booked to Iceland and New Zealand in January, neither of which I have visited before. I am hoping Australia will be my third new country at some point throughout the year, and maybe somewhere in South East Asia for the others.
2) Travel Solo
I already have plans to do this one too since I will be heading over to New Zealand on my own. I mentioned earlier that this year I did my first ever solo trip in Germany and I surprised myself with how great it was. Of course there are times that can be lonely but the positives massively outweigh the negatives. I want to push myself to go on little trips alone. I also want to carry on doing things even if no-one else around me wants to do them.
3) Put money aside for the bigger adventures
I have a working holiday visa while I am in New Zealand, but I don’t plan on working the whole time I’m out there. I want to take time off and enjoy travelling around the country. So I can’t say every month I’ll save a certain amount but every time I do get paid I want to put some back into savings. This savings goal will hopefully enable me to make more memories without counting the pennies so much.
4) Visit at least one new place each month
Sometimes its easy to get stuck into a routine of going to work and doing the same thing day in and day out. But this year I want to make the most of my days off and exploring new places. Whether that means going on a road trip to somewhere new or jumping on a plane and going further afield. Visiting one new place a month will be a new travel goal of mine.
5) Learn to ski
Skiing has always been something I have wanted to try. This year I’m going to go to Queenstown in winter while I’m in New Zealand and give it a go!
These are just some of the things I want to do in 2019. I hope it’s a year of many more new experiences, friends and happy memories.
